Equivalent to a previously mentioned band, I learnt about the music of New York dream pop band, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart pretty early, via Skatterbrain. It was just that at that time I never would’ve anticipated that they would turn out as huge as they were today (not huge HUGE, more like Stereogum-heralded huge), which was my mistake for being indifferent to their consistent growth in creating impeccable indie pop confections.
But the band have certainly developed full-fledged and perfected their sound since the last time I heard them. One tune for instance, ‘This Love is Fucking Right’, replaced the former wafer-thin, lightweight frame with a production that sounds fuller, clearer and more ‘at your face’, while incorporating healthier doses of pretty girl/boy harmonies and fuzzed-out guitar squalls. This is definitely a much needed improvement for the band. In anticipation of their debut in early 2009, the band recently released a brand new single called ‘Everything With You’ last October through Slumberland. The sound of their music stays true to everything lo-fi and often draws comparison to the ever-so-awesome My Bloody Valentine. Fast becoming the frontrunners of its own genre, this is a band that aren’t reluctant to offer you their brand of jaunty pop jangles, sugar-coated hooks, and a frosting of blissfully charming, breezy harmonies. Nice. I can’t wait for 2009.
